Leadership Lessons from Sports to Business
1. Plan to come back from disappointment and setbacks stronger.
San Antonio Spurs have had their share of setback and wins.
Despite injuries to key players, San Antonio Spur was the only team to win more than 60 games in a regular season, and win another extended playoff run this year!
2. Give your players/employees time to rest and catch up.
In order to benefit from the long term rewards, and continuing valuable productivity when it matters the most, you need to allow everyone time off to refresh and come back stronger.
3. Good coaches, players and employees have interests outside of their work.
“You have to give the message that the world is wider than a basketball courtâ€, Popovich commented once.
Though Popovich is fiercely devoted to basketball, he does have other interests. He is a wine lover, and co-owns a vineyard in Oregon. In addition he is a Russian literature fan, history buff, world traveler, and foodie. He graduated from the United States Air Force Academy and was considering becoming a spy prior to starting his career in coaching.
4. Adaptability
During Popovich’s time has a head coach in NBA his business has changed. In 1999 the sport was a slower-paced defensive game. In the mid-2000s the NBA game became more free-flowing where perimeter players could shine more. In the 2010-11 season Popovich had to change his offensive team’s style to a more up-tempo one. Since then they have won the Southwest Division four years in a row.
Business conditions are changing all the time. In your specific industry, product category, technology, and your competitors may have advanced so much recently that a change is needed to maintain or achieve your desired profits levels.
Remember to take a fresh look at your business and assess whether you are on track in the marketplace where you should be, relative to your 2014 Plan.
Don’t forget to evaluate your executive team in terms of their true strengths in this new market place. It may be time to bring in stronger talent to address the market changes.
