Today I want to touch on just some of the untold truths about the executive job search. What I mean here is some of the bad and good part of an executive job search and in some cases some of the bad parts that no one really likes to talk about.

When I started thinking about the “Untold Truths About the Executive Job Search”, I thought of all the different ups and downs, which are part of the natural executive job search process.

I wish that I could wave my magic wand as the expert and tell you a very secret special way to bypass the ups and downs of the executive search process. Reality is there is no way to avoid the ups and downs. There are some ways you can soften the peaks, and extreme valleys.

Again the ability to accomplish this rest primarily on your shoulders and a small portion on the market. I am suggesting that reality is about 60% is in your control and 40% is out of your control.

In talking about the ups and downs, one can also say the dark and bright sides of the executive search process.

Tips to Dealing With the Feeling from Being Rejected

 

1)   Do not take it personally. Don’t get offended. It is only as big as you allow it to be. There are too many variables in their decision for you to take it personally.

Unfortunately most companies will not give you good solid feedback, so don’t waste your time taking it personally without any valid information.

2)   Look at your reaction to the rejection. Is it in proportion to the circumstances or is part of your emotions tied to other issues you are dealing with. Define the other issues that are commingled.

3)   Deal with the emotions of perhaps feeling let down, disappointed, angry, devastated, powerless, feeling like a loser. Own up to how you are feeling from being turned down. Own up to the feelings, share how you feel with someone you are close to and then move on. Get back on your horse. Get back to your executive job search plan.

4)   Analyze the failure. What can you learn from it? See if you can get any type of feedback that you can from the company or executive recruiter. Take that feedback or your own internal gut feelings on why you were not chosen for the executive job, and redesign your executive job search goals. Learn, grow and improve from the experience.

5)   Remember yourself worth is not defined by others. You define your own self-worth. You know you are a good intelligent person that can make a positive difference in the right organization. Your self-confidence and persistence are going to lead you to succeed in your executive job search campaign.

6)   The more rejections you get, the closer you are to landing your next executive jobs. Studies have shown that most successful people in life have dealt with at least 10 setbacks before they really succeeded.
